Gibson 1954 Les Paul Electric Guitar Oxblood: Classic '54 tone with the wraparound tailpiece. In 1954 Gibson introduced the wraparound tailpiece on the Les Paul. It was a simple enough idea, but the effect was astounding. In earlier (and many later) designs the string vibration was stopped at the bridge, which had only downward pressure transferring the string vibration. Utilizing similar physics to the strings pulling on the soundboard of an acoustic guitar, the wraparound tailpiece doubles as a bridge and allows the freely vibrating strings to apply a lot of direct leverage sideways to the arched maple top. Combined with the total integrity of the set neck joint, this extra vibration produces far greater resonance, involving the wood much more intimately in the production of tone. When you play this guitar acoustically, you can actually feel the resonance. Unplugged, it manifests as an unusually bright and loud tone, with a full middle. When run through the powerful '57 Classic PAF reissue humbuckers, the extra resonance results in amazing sustain and a very rich, cutting presence. If you play at the front of the mix, this is a truly solid ally that will always have the necessary tonal brawn to hold down your end of the tune. This hybrid vintage LP feels substantial in your hands, especially the thick, solid mahogany neck. But the 22-fret rosewood fretboard is smooth playing. The individual volume and tone controls let you tune in precisely the amount of each pickup that suits you, and the high-end pots are fluid and quiet. The sealed, low-ratio Schaller tuners provide easy tuning and solid intonation. All of that is not to mention its astounding looks. The red-so-dark-it's-black oxblood paint job has a depth and visual appeal that can't be conveyed by the pictures here. The full binding, selector switch mount, and pick-up mounts frame its subdued glow. Nickel hardware and transparent gold tone knobs provide elegant counterpoints to the pearloid trapezoid inlays and headstock logo inlay. Whether you're playing road houses or coliseums, this is an axe that will never fail to dazzle visually or tonally. …
